Hi (full time) international students of HKU!
I am Shaun and I am running for the HKU Students’ Union executive committee. I know in the past the HKUSU has mostly been focused on local students so many of you may not be aware of what it is, but it is a student organization that is supposed to represent all students of the university. This year I want to make sure international students are represented as well.
The HKUSU provides funding for all student clubs and communicates with the university authority on behalf of the students on all issues campus related such as the curriculum, food, halls, the shuttle bus service, and so on.
In the past, the activities of the HKUSU and its councils and clubs have been dominated by local students, and I believe this is a great learning experience in university life that international students are missing out on. In the HKUSU council, you get to work on things related to current affairs, law, finance, administration etc. in a legislative setting. A lot of prominent politicians have started out by being a member of the HKUSU Council, and I really hope you guys can be a part of this great tradition.
If you get involved, not only will you have a fantastic experience and make lifelong friendships, but you will also finally have a say in the environment and development of our university.
I plan on helping you get involved by changing the official language of the Union from Chinese and English to just English, reserving some portion of the seats in the Council for international students and also changing the culture of HKU to be more accommodating to international students from the top down.
Another focus of mine is to run a student union that focuses on improving life for 95% of students rather than on political activism that 5% of students care about.
If you agree with my vision, please support me in the following ways:
1: tomorrow at 12:30-14:30pm (Friday), please come to my Central Campaign at Happy Park and tell everyone how you feel as an international student in HKU. I have been campaigning for the last four days and only local students have shown up and spoken about local issues. These students have been very critical of my campaign for various reasons but one of them is because of the resistance to the change in culture I wish to bring.
2: vote for us between Monday to Friday next week at one of the election booths in campus
3: encourage your friends to vote for us because many, many local students will be voting against us.
4: help my campaign by handing out flyers!!! (message me for more details)
To get elected, my cabinet needs at least 10% of students to vote for us, and have more “for” votes than “against” votes.
Last year, only 15% of students casted a vote in the HKUSU election, and I don’t think many of them were international students. You guys represent 30% of the population, so if all of you can cast your vote, we will get elected easily!
I promise to serve you faithfully and diligently if elected and make HKU the international university that you were sold.
Thank you for reading this wall of text, and hope you have a great day.
